SUSTAINABILITY & ENVIRONMENT

We are privileged to work with beautiful products from nature. So, we are very pleased to partner with Select Harvests, our almond grower, on a number of sustainability initiatives – protecting and caring for our environment for future generations.

We all know water is a scarce and finite resource. At the almond orchards, we conserve, recycle and save water wherever possible – this includes improving drainage to recycle orchard water and installing best practice irrigation systems to deliver water efficiently with reduced impact on the water tables.

We also realise that orchards and processing facilities are significant users of energy, so Select Harvests have implemented a number of initiatives to reduce their use of energy at all their sites, including installing an off grid solar powered farm hub.

Select Harvests has recently made a substantial investment in a biomass electricity co-generation plant. This plant converts almond by-products such as hulls, shells and other orchard waste into electricity, resulting in a huge carbon footprint reduction of 27%, the equivalent to taking 8,210 cars off the road!

As a commitment to reducing as much waste as possible, the potash produced by this combustion process will be mixed with the soil waste to use in the orchard as fertiliser.

Bees are crucial for pollinating orchards, so we need to look after them. As part of the commitment to protecting the health and performance of bees, we’ve planted alternative forage crops to almonds, such as canola and a range of native plants.

We also provide water at hive sites to assist bee hydration!
